Tending What You Chose to KeepšŸƒ

Two months ago, we pruned. Last month, we sat with the quiet after the cut. This month, we're talking about what almost nobody covers: once something new is actually growing, how do you keep it alive?

NEW GROWTH IS FRAGILE BEFORE IT'S ESTABLISHED.

That baby leaf that just unfurled doesn't have deep roots yet. It can't survive the same conditions the old growth could tolerate. Go right back to your old pace, your old commitments, your old way of saying yes to everything, and the new thing you're growing can get crushed before it's had a chance to root.

TENDING ISN'T THE SAME AS CONTROLLING.

Here's what I love about actually caring for something new: you don't yank on a shoot to make it grow faster. You water it, you make sure it has light, and then you leave it alone to do what it's going to do on its own timeline. The same goes for a new boundary, a new habit, a new relationship with yourself — you can create the conditions for it, but you can't force the outcome.

WHAT YOU KEEP STILL NEEDS SEASONS OF REST.

Even thriving plants don't grow at full speed forever. They have growth spurts and they have dormant periods, and both are normal. If the thing you're tending seems to slow down, that doesn't mean it's dying. It might just be resting before its next push.

I think this is the part we skip when we celebrate new growth — we treat the arrival as the finish line. But every gardener knows arrival is just the start of a different kind of work. Tending isn't as dramatic as pruning. It's quieter. It's slower. And it's just as necessary.

A SMALL RITUAL, IF YOU NEED ONE

Name one thing that's actually taking root for you right now — something that grew out of last month's bare stretch. Don't ask how to make it grow faster. Ask a gentler question: what does this need from me right now? Not forever. Just right now.

What are you tending this season? I'd love to hear about it — drop it in the comments, or tell me over on the podcast episode this post pairs with.
